School age child checklist
Your school age child may need a speech and language evaluation if:
- Has trouble finding words, uses “this”, “thing”, “stuff” as fillers.
- Doesn’t seem to be able to retain instructions or has trouble with reading comprehension.
- Has difficulty defining words without repeating verbatim.
- Uses incorrect sentence structure, leaves out words, or has trouble with irregular tenses and plurals.
- Has trouble reading fluently.
- Has trouble explaining what he’s read.
- Has difficulty maintaining a conversation, or answering and asking questions of his speaking partner.
- Has difficulty grasping the “main idea” of a story or being able to guess what might happen next in the story.
- Has difficulty verbally sequencing daily events or is unable to answer when asked “tell me what you did in school today”.
- Has difficulty giving details.
- Has difficulty following school related directions.
- Has trouble keeping up or paying attention in school.
